Is there anything in the world with more names than marijuana? While marijuana culture and slang terms can’t be scientifically proven, the answer must be “no.”

Maybe it’s because the use of weed had to be hidden for so many years. Or maybe it’s because people just like using slang. Whatever the case, a whole language has developed around cannabis culture.

Some of it is a holdout from the days when marijuana was illegal for any reason. With 29 states now making it legal for either recreational or medical use, that’s no longer the case. But the slang remains.

It extends beyond just the name of the plant, but that’s where we’ll start.

A Rose By Any Other Name

Ask anyone who has ever used marijuana and they will tell you the group they hung out with had a special name for it. Some people rolled a “spliff,” others rolled a “joint.” Some people “roll a number.” Some make a “blunt” or a “doobie.” All the same thing.

Of course, once your burn one of those, you are “high” or “stoned.”  But you don’t have to say you’re high or stoned. You can say you’re blitzed. Blazed. Bouldered. Baked. And that’s just the “Bs.”

As for marijuana itself – it’s seemingly endless. In this article alone it’s already been called marijuana, cannabis and weed. More slang terms include Mary Jane and ganja. But that’s just scratching the surface.

Chances are you have heard, or will hear, the following slang terms that stand in for simply saying “marijuana.”

• Bud
• Green
• Grass
• Herb
• Laughing Grass
• Nug
• Chronic
• Pakalolo
• Reefer
• The Good
• Pot

And in parts of the Deep South you might even hear it called “Wacky Tobaccy,” although not necessarily by someone who actually uses marijuana.

Other Slang

Then, there are the many terms around marijuana usage that have entered the marijuana culture lexicon. However, again, the terms that are used can depend on the region of the country where you live.

420. The date (April 20^th) of many cannabis-related events in honor of the supposed time that a group of Californians met (4:20 pm) after school while searching for a hidden area where cannabis was being grown.

Cannivore. A person who prefers to eat cannabis-infused edibles rather than smoke it in the “traditional” way.

Diesel. A very pungent strain of marijuana. Not only is the odor powerful, but the effects from Diesel are typically fairly powerful, too. So, consider it a warning if someone offers you some.

Florist. Old school term for a marijuana dealer. Can still apply to today’s legal dispensaries if you are talking about it around someone who you don’t want to know what you are doing. “Hey, let’s drop by the florist on the way to the grocery store.”

Zip. An ounce of marijuana.

That’s enough for one day – people can only remember so many new words at once. But it gives you something to think about next time you are around people and using marijuana.
