With a growing number of states legalizing marijuana for both medical and recreational use, there is increasing speculation about which states may be the next to follow suit. They would join the other states in America that now offer legal cannabis to more than 155 million people, as well as the 38 states that now offer legal medical cannabis.

A handful of states are currently considering legalizing marijuana in the near future, including Minnesota, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, according to CNBC. Missouri, Maryland, and Delaware all recently approved legal recreational cannabis.

The MJ Biz Factbook projects that total medical and recreational marijuana sales will reach $33.6 billion by the end of 2023, a trend largely driven by new adult-use markets. Michigan provides a great indication of the growth of the industry with medical and recreational cannabis sales bringing in $325 million in tax revenue just last year alone.

The following looks at some of the states that may soon join Michigan and the other legal cannabis states.

Minnesota

Lawmakers are currently considering a bill that would legalize recreational marijuana for adults over the age of 21. The bill would allow adults to possess up to 1.5 ounces of marijuana and would create a system for legal sales and taxation. Supporters of the bill argue that legalization could bring significant economic benefits to the state, including the creation of thousands of new jobs.

Florida

In the Sunshine State, advocates are pushing for a constitutional amendment that would legalize recreational marijuana. The amendment, which requires approval by 60% of voters, does not establish a framework for what a legal market would look like. Supporters of the amendment argue that legalization would bring significant economic benefits to the state and would help to reduce the number of people who are arrested and incarcerated for non-violent drug offenses.

Ohio

In Ohio, advocates for marijuana legalization are gathering signatures for a ballot initiative that would legalize recreational marijuana. The ballot measure would require the state to set up a system for legal sales and taxation. About half of Ohio voters support legal recreational cannabis, according to a survey cited by CNBC. Divided by political affiliation, Democrats (66.2%) and independents (50%) had the highest levels of support, while Republicans (36.3%) had the lowest.

Pennsylvania

There are currently three different proposals to create a legal adult-use cannabis system in Pennsylvania, two in the state house and one in the senate. Each one seeks to tax the crop for the well-being of communities and include initiatives aimed at social justice. However, CNBC reported that the state is behind other parts of the country in building momentum for legalization.

As more states legalize marijuana, it is becoming increasingly clear that the tide is turning in favor of legalization. Whether it is Minnesota, Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, or another state, it seems likely that we will continue to see more states join the ranks of those that have legalized marijuana in the coming years.
