Magnolia Bakery Is Making THC Versions of Banana Pudding, Red Velvet Cake

Famed New York City dessert-maker Magnolia Bakery has struck a deal to transform some of its most famous baked confections into cannabis edibles. Unfortunately for New Yorkers, they’ll have to travel out of state to get them.

Magnolia Bakery is making THC-infused versions of some of its famous dishes: banana pudding and red velvet cake. This is the first-ever foray into the legal cannabis edibles market for Magnolia Bakery. But the global brand will not have them for sale in any of its locations in New York state.

Magnolia Bakery has partnered with cannabis products company Green Thumb Industries, to create THC banana pudding and red velvet cake bars co-branded by Magnolia Bakery and Incredibles, which is Green Thumb’s brand of edibles.

“We’ve seen plenty of feedback over the years from our fans who have enjoyed banana pudding or red velvet cake as their munchies of choice. That’s sort of where the idea initially generated from,” said  Sarah Gramling, Magnolia’s vice president of public relations and partnerships, according to Gothamist.

The Magnolia Bakery Bars Available in Cannabis Versions

Green Thumb, through its Incredibles brand, is offering two Magnolia Bakery bars. One is the Red Velvet Piece Ahhh Cake bar that contains moist, crimson-colored cake, a cream cheese flavor and rich chocolate. The bar has 10mg of THC and 10mg of CBD per piece.

The other bar is the Swirled Famous Banana Pudding that contains a dollop of creamy vanilla pudding, crunchy vanilla cookies and freeze-dried bananas. The 10-piece bar contains 10mg of THC per piece.

Magnolia Bakery and Green Thumb will sell the bars in only three states: Illinois, Nevada and Massachusetts at Rise Dispensaries. Prices will range between $18 to $30 for a 10-piece box, depending on the location.

Why You Can’t Get the Bars In New York

Cannabis remains illegal at the federal level, which leads to situations such as the one with the Magnolia Bakery pudding and cake bars. New Yorkers might want to try one from the bakery that became famous in their city, but they can’t because it’s impossible to have a national distribution for cannabis products.

There are 11 licensed cannabis dispensaries in New York City, but Green Thumb does not have a deal to sell its products through them, according to the Gothamist. And there’s no plan to change that anytime soon.

However, it’s a great deal for Magnolia Bakery and for those in Illinois, Massachusetts and Nevada who want to try the bars. Neil Saunders, retail analyst and managing director at GlobalData Retail, told CNN, “There is no real downside to Magnolia, as consumer opinions on cannabis are now relatively liberal. Moreover, these products will be sold through dispensaries rather than being available in mainstream retailers, so people not interested in marijuana will not be exposed to them.”

Incredibles has more info on its website for both the red velvet bar and the banana pudding bar.
