Moisture Content Testing

Moisture content defines the amount of water in your food and ingredients, but water activity explains how the water in your food will react with microorganisms. The higher the water activity, the faster microorganisms like bacteria, yeast, and mold will be able to grow – resulting in higher standards of food storage.

Residual Solvents and Processing Chemical Testing

Residual solvents, formerly referred to as organic volatile impurities (OVIs), are trace level chemical residues that are used or produced in the manufacture of drug substances and excipients or in the preparation of drug products. They can also be byproducts formed during packaging and storage of the drug product.

Microbiological Impurities Testing (A. fumigatus, A. flavus, A. niger, A. terreus)

In general, microorganisms can cause disease in two distinct ways. The first is through active infection: high-level replication in the host can lead to structural damage, toxicity, and dangerous hyperactivation of the immune system. The second is due to the fact that certain species of bacteria and fungi can produce toxins which can be ingested and cause disease even in the absence of viable bacterial or fungal cells. Toxin production itself requires robust replication; so although this disease mechanism does not require that microbial cells be alive or healthy at the point of ingestion, it does require that they were able to thrive on the food matrix at some prior point. It also requires that there be no processing step that removes or inactivates the toxin.

Homogeneity Testing of Edible Cannabis Products

Ensuring that THC is distributed uniformly throughout a batch of a Marijuana Infused Product (MIP) provides users with the assurance of a consistently prepared edible. A user who may be accustomed to a chocolate bar containing 50mg of THC will know what effect to expect when he/she consumes that bar.

Foreign Material Testing

Earth Labs analyzes all samples under our California Compliance Testing for filth and foreign material present in the sample. “Filth and foreign material” includes but is not limited to hair, insects, feces, packaging contaminants, and manufacturing waste and by-products.

Terpenoids Testing

Terpene analysis is run on a GC/MS with headspace capabilities. With easy sample preparation, this laboratory analysis can be used to look at over 140+ terpenes of varying concentrations.

Mycotoxins Testing

Cannabis products may be susceptible to contamination by naturally occurring mycotoxins during cultivation, storage, or processing. As natural byproducts of several mold species, aflatoxin and ochratoxin present serious health risks to humans and animals – including liver toxicity, immune suppression, and are amongst the most carcinogenic naturally occurring substances known, according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).

Heavy Metals Analysis

The term "heavy metals" is loosely defined. It is related to the periodic table of elements and refers to a variety of elements with high density or metallic properties. These elements are found naturally throughout the environment and are also used by industries to manufacture a wide range of common products. Some of them, such as iron, copper, selenium, molybdenum, and zinc, are required in trace amounts by the body for normal function but can be toxic at higher levels. Significant concentrations of any of the heavy metals can be irritating or damaging to the body and can contaminate soil, air, food, and water, persisting indefinitely in the environment. Because they are a source of potential injury, the term "heavy metals" is frequently used interchangeably with the term "toxic metals."
